EDI Advisory Board
EDI’s advisory board is composed of ecologists and informatics professionals, and we engage with them during regular meetings and reviews, receiving insightful advice and guidance. Terms generally last 3 years, and are renewable.
Current advisory board
Aaron Ellison is an ecologist, photographer and writer. He recently retired after 20 years as the Senior Research Fellow in Ecology at Harvard University and as a Senior Ecologist at the Harvard Forest. He also served as Deputy Director of the Harvard Forest from 2018-2021.
Mary Martin is information manager at the Hubbard Brook LTER site, and has also worked with the Baltimore Ecosystem Study LTER. As a member of the LTER Executive Board, she interfaces between Network leadership and site data and information managers. Her data management expertise is broad, encompassing spatial data, data package design, and quality control and assurance. Her scientific background is in forest remote sensing and nitrogen use by plants.
Adam Hinterthuer is a science writer and the director of programs for the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which provides educational and training programs for journalists writing about natural resource, environment and energy issues. He is also the outreach specialist for the UW Center for Limnology, where he works on communications and public outreach for a leading freshwater sciences research center.
Erin Robinson works at the intersection of informatics, Earth science and non-profit management. She served as the Executive Director for the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) for six years. In her position with Metadata Game Changers, she facilitates collaboration to help build communities of Earth science technology practitioners and researchers to expedite progress toward data interoperability. Her skill set is both technical and managerial.
Stacy A McNulty is Associate Director of Research at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. Her research interests are based in northeastern temperate ecosystems and include forest ecology, landscape ecology, and the study of social-ecological systems. Her research often contains an applied component and is coupled with powerful computing tools such as a Geographic Information System.
Renato Figueiredo is a professor of computer science in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. His research interests include virtualization in distributed systems, virtual networks and machines, Overlay networks, and Cloud computing.
Former Advisory Board Members
Ian Foster is a New Zealand-American computer scientist. He is a distinguished fellow, senior scientist, and director of the Data Science and Learning division at Argonne National Laboratory, and a professor in the department of computer science at the University of Chicago.
Rebecca Koskela is the Executive Director of Research Data Alliance US. Prior to this, she was the Executive Director of DataONE at the University of New Mexico. Rebecca has a background in both bioinformatics and high-performance computing.
Nate Booth is a Project Chief and Information Technology Specialist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He has managed development of the National Water Quality Assessment Data Warehouse system and development of the joint USGS/USEPA web services specification to accommodate data sharing between the agencies and is actively involved with the Open Geospatial Consortium data exchange standards.
Peter Arzberger is involved in many international collaborations related to computer science, for example, the UT Austin - Portugal partnership, and PRAGMA (Pacific Rim Applications and Middleware Assembly), and GLEON (Global Lakes Ecological Observatory Network). He is a former executive director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center, as well as Senior Science Advisor to NSF in the field of Computer and Information Science. His scientific expertise is in the area of Population genetics, ecology and lakes, and he specializes in Middleware, Cloud Computing, Biodiversity, and Grid Computing.
